What Is a Sensory Diet? How to Build One for Your Child

If your child has sensory processing challenges, you've probably heard the term "sensory diet." Despite the name, it has nothing to do with food — and everything to do with helping your child's nervous system stay regulated throughout the day.

What Is a Sensory Diet?

A sensory diet is a personalized plan of sensory activities scheduled throughout the day to help a child's nervous system stay in a state of optimal regulation — calm and focused, not overwhelmed or under-stimulated. The term was coined by occupational therapist Patricia Wilbarger, and it remains one of the most effective tools OTs use today for children with sensory processing challenges.

Think of it like a workout routine for the nervous system. Just as your body functions better with regular, predictable physical activity, a child's nervous system functions better with the right type and amount of sensory input at predictable intervals.

Why Do Some Children Need a Sensory Diet?

Children with sensory processing disorder (SPD) or sensory differences related to ADHD or autism often have a nervous system that responds differently to sensory input. They may be:

  • Over-responsive — easily overwhelmed by sounds, textures, movement, or light

  • Under-responsive — seeking intense sensory experiences to feel regulated

  • Mixed — over-responsive to some inputs and under-responsive to others

Without enough of the right sensory input at the right times, these children can experience meltdowns, difficulty focusing, emotional dysregulation, or trouble transitioning between activities. A sensory diet provides the nervous system with what it needs — before it reaches a crisis point.

What Does a Sensory Diet Include?

A sensory diet is built around activities targeting the sensory systems most relevant to your child's profile. At Thrive n Play, we design sensory diets around four primary types of input:

Proprioceptive input (heavy work): Carrying a loaded backpack, wall push-ups, jumping on a trampoline, or crawling through tunnels. Heavy work is deeply calming for most children and is often the backbone of a sensory diet.

Vestibular input (movement): Swinging, spinning, rocking, or bouncing. Vestibular input has a powerful and fast effect on alertness and regulation — a few minutes of the right movement can shift a child's entire state.

Tactile input (touch): Sensory bins, playdough, textured toys, or therapist-guided brushing programs. Tactile activities can calm or alert depending on the type, pressure, and predictability.

Oral motor input: Chewing crunchy snacks, sipping through a straw, or blowing bubbles. Oral input is highly regulating and easy to incorporate into daily routines.

How Does an OT Build a Sensory Diet?

A sensory diet is not a generic list of activities — it's designed around your specific child after a thorough OT evaluation. At Thrive n Play, we assess each child's sensory profile, identify their regulation windows and triggers, and design a daily schedule that fits your family's real-life routine.

Equally important: we coach you on how to implement the plan. A sensory diet only works if it's actually used consistently. We build plans that are realistic, doable without major equipment, and flexible enough to adjust as your child grows.

Signs Your Child May Need a Sensory Diet

  • Frequent meltdowns or prolonged difficulty calming down

  • Avoiding certain textures, sounds, or busy environments

  • Crashing into furniture, seeking tight squeezes, or constantly touching things

  • Difficulty transitioning between activities

  • Trouble sitting still or focusing at school

  • Emotional responses that seem out of proportion to the trigger

If you're noticing these patterns, an OT evaluation is a great starting point. Our team can assess your child's sensory profile and design a sensory diet — along with other OT interventions — to help them thrive at home, at school, and in the community.
